Toni Morrison is the most prominent and successful African
American woman writer of the 20th century. She received the Nobel Prize for
literature in 1993 for her outstanding achievement on writing, and became the
first African American woman writer to win this award. She is clearly aware
that the dignity and identity of the black are based on the relatively
integrated African American culture. Most of her stories happened in the black
community, where the daily life of the ordinary black people is connected
closely with the myth and folk tradition of Africa.
The
Bluest Eye (Narrative)
Toni Morrison structured the bluest
eye in terms of four different sections that entail autumn, winter, spring and
summer. She makes a connection between what is happening in the story with the
four seasons. Furthermore, she delivers ideas in the perspective of different
characters such as Pecola, Claudia, Frieda and other important characters,
therefore demonstrating coming of age and or different situations in which the
reader can empathize with each and every character. Also the idea of starting
from the end is a technique that Toni Morrison utilizes in order for the
structure to make sense and deliver an important piece of information that
attracts the reader. Nonetheless she utilizes a prolonged conflict that enables
the reader to observe and connect with the issue through the different
situations the characters live through. The sequence does not follow a linear
plot instead there are a series of flashbacks and situations that occur
simultaneously. For example the fragment in which, Toni Morrison depicts how
Cholly and Pauline meet each other and fall in love, with the evident intention
of proving the point that innocence and suppressing sexual desires are two very
relevant themes within the novel. Furthermore repetition is something commonly
utilized in order to reiterate important actions that may be relevant to the
plot but also to the transmission of a message to the audience, which can be
interpreted in a very personal manner. Finally the usage of scenic and
panoramic techniques are integrated within the plot structure, the scenic
scenes are not very easily perceived but they include the fast pieces of
information that go accordingly with the real life time, for example in the
fragment of the novel where Pecola is having her first period, things are
described in a quick manner. On the other hand panoramic techniques have a much
more detailed explanation and a vivid description, this is seen for example
when Cholly and Pecola meet, there is a lot of minor details included that aid
and allow for a deeper understanding.
